Jogchum Plat

Prof Plat is professor Physiology of Nutrition at the Maastricht University, The Netherlands. With his group, they work on the theme of “metabolic health” which is at the core of health & disease and amongst others an important factor in the development of type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Prof Plat was elected chair (2013-2016) of the Dutch Academy of Nutrition Sciences. He is current head of the department of Nutrition and Movement Sciences and in this position responsible for the Maastricht Metabolic Research Unit (MRUM). Finally, he is leader of Division 1 “Obesity, Diabetes and Cardiovascular Heath” of the research school NUTRIM. Finally, prof Plat is head of the Sterol and Oxysterol Research lab Maastricht (STORM) and is known from his work on plant sterols and stanols in the management of dyslipidemia, which contributed to the current position of these compounds in most international guidelines. He was also member of the EAS consensus panel writing the publication “The position of plant sterols and stanols in the management of dyslipidemia and prevention of cardiovascular disease”. Additionally, Prof Plat works on other dietary intervention strategies such as fatty acids, beta-glucans, nuts, protein hydrolysates and other (non-)nutrients. He published >200 original research papers.

Lieve van Brakel

Dr. Lieve van Brakel is a postdoctoral researcher at Maastricht University. She is a member of the Physiology of Nutrition group, which is part of the Department of Human Nutrition and Movement Sciences and part of the research institute NUTRIM. Her main research interests lie within the field of immunomodulation and metabolic health. She started her PhD research in 2018 with Prof. dr. Plat and Prof. dr. ir. Mensink. Her PhD research focused on the effects of dietary determinants and approaches on immune health throughout life, with special attention for plant sterols and stanols. As postdoctoral researcher, she will continue to work on the immunomodulatory effects of plant stanols.

Maurice Konings 

Ing. Maurice Konings is a senior research technician and PhD candidate at Maastricht University. He is a member of the Physiology of Human Nutrition group, which is part of the department of Nutrition and Movement Sciences and part of the research institute NUTRIM. He is facility manager of the Sterol and Oxysterol research lab Maastricht (STORM), his PhD research interests lie within the field of cholesterol metabolism regulation and metabolic health, with special attention on absorption and synthesis of non-cholesterol sterols and their oxidation products in metabolic health and the influence of (non)-food components.
